Cascadian Farm Awards Great Lakes Region a River Cleanup as Part of “Change Flows” Initiative

Organic Pioneer Supports Water Protection and Restoration in Celebration of Commitment to Sustainability

MINNEAPOLIS--()--Cascadian Farm®, one of the country’s leading brands of organic foods, today announces that the Great Lakes region was awarded a river cleanup as part of the “Change Flows” initiative, a program celebrating Cascadian Farm’s nearly 40-year commitment to sustainability. This spring, consumers visited www.CascadianFarm.com to “like” the U.S. region that they thought was most deserving of a river clean up. Thousands of consumers participated, with the Great Lakes region securing the most votes nationwide.

As a result of consumer votes, Cascadian Farm selected the DuPage River Sweep in Naperville, Illinois to receive the sponsorship, and on May 21, 2011, representatives from Cascadian Farm worked alongside local volunteers to pick up debris along the river. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the cleanup event, and each year hundreds of volunteers join the efforts.

“We were thrilled by the support from consumers nationwide for the ‘Change Flows’ campaign,” said Tom Nientimp, marketing director for Cascadian Farm. “Cascadian Farm has always worked in harmony with the land, and we know that water is one of our most precious resources. We were proud to help the Great Lakes Region and be a sponsor of the DuPage River Sweep.”

As part of the “Change Flows” initiative, Cascadian Farm contributed $50,000 to American Rivers, the nation’s leading environmental organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the nation’s rivers. The organization’s mission perfectly aligns with Cascadian Farm’s commitment to water as an important resource for crops, farms, communities and the environment. Cascadian Farm’s organic farming methods help preserve and improve soil quality by reducing the amount of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers in local water.

“With the help of Cascadian Farm, we were able to raise awareness of the issues facing our rivers and help people learn how important they are to a healthy community,” said Andrew Fahlund, senior vice president of Conservation for American Rivers. “Simple steps like participating in a local river cleanup can help our waterways thrive for generations to come.”
