Annaly’s Michael Farrell to Appear before House Financial Services Committee Hearing on Housing Finance

NEW YORK--()--Annaly Capital Management, Inc. (NYSE: NLY) announced that its Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Michael A.J. Farrell, will appear as a witness today before the Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee of the House Committee on Financial Services, at a hearing entitled “Are There Government Barriers to the Housing Market Recovery?”

Mr. Farrell focuses on the private label securitization market, and lists four reasons why it is currently dormant. First, the economics of the new-issue private label MBS don’t work; second, better relative value can be found in other sectors of the private-label market; third, origination levels are low as a result of stricter underwriting standards; and fourth, certain aspects of the future regulatory environment remain uncertain.

In his remarks, Mr. Farrell states he represents the perspective of secondary mortgage market investors who provide the majority of the capital to the $10 trillion residential mortgage market. “[T]here is not enough money in the banking system to fund our nation’s housing stock, at least not at current levels. It is thus axiomatic that without a healthy securitization market our housing finance system would have to undergo a radical transformation.”

Mr. Farrell’s remarks are available on Annaly’s website at http://www.annaly.com/Admin/AttachmentFiles/152TestimonyofAnnalysFarrellbeforeHFS2-16-11.pdf.
